When you feel urge to sin

01 · Istiʿadhah #1

أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ.

Aʿūdhu bi-llāhi mina-sh-Shayṭāni-r-rajīm.

I seek protection in Allah from the rejected Shayṭān.

- Allah says: "When you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from rejected Shayṭān." (16:98)

02 · Duʿa for Allah’s Love & Protection From Trials

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ فِعْلَ الْخَيْرَاتِ ، وَتَرْكَ الْمُنْكَرَاتِ ، وَحُبَّ الْمَسَاكِيْنِ ، وَأَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِيْ وَتَرْحَمَنِيْ ، وَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ فِتْنَةَ قَوْمٍ فَتَوَفَّنِيْ غَيْرَ مَفْتُوْنٍ ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ ، وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُّحِبُّكَ ، وَحُبَّ عَمَلٍ يُّقَرِّبُنِيْ إِلَىٰ حُبِّكَ

Allāhumma innī as’aluka fiʿla-l-khayrāt, wa tarka-l-munkarāt, wa ḥubba-l-masākīn, wa an taghfira lī wa tarḥamanī, wa idhā arad-ta fitnata qawmin fa-tawaffanī ghayra maftūn, wa as’aluka ḥubbak, wa ḥubba ma-y-yuḥibbuk, wa ḥubba ʿamali-y-yuqarribunī ilā ḥubbik.

O Allah, I beg You to enable me to do good deeds, abstain from evil acts, and love the poor; and that You forgive me and have mercy upon me. When You intend to test a people, then grant me death without being tested. I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love you, and the love of deeds which will bring me closer to Your love.

- Mu’ādh b. Jabl (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates: “One morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prevented from coming to us for the Fajr Salāh, until we were just about to look for the eye of the sun (meaning sunrise). Then he came out quickly and the Salāh was prepared for. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Salah, and he performed his Salah in a relatively quick manner. When he said the salām, he called out to us saying: ‘Stay in your rows as you are.’ Then he turned to us and said: ‘I am going to narrate to you what kept me from you this morning: I got up during the night, I performed wudhu and prayed as much as I was able to, and I dozed off during my Salāh, and fell in a deep sleep. Then I saw my Lord, Blessed and Most High, in the best of appearances. He said: ‘O Muhammad!’ I said: ‘My Lord here I am my Lord!’ He said: ‘What is it that the most exalted group busy themselves with?’ I said: ‘I do not know Lord.’ And He said it three times.” He said: “So I saw Him place His Palm between my shoulders, and I sensed the coolness of His Fingertips between my breast. Then everything was disclosed for me, and I became aware. So He said: ‘O Muhammad!’ I said: ‘Here I am my Lord!’ He said: ‘What is it that the most exalted group busy themselves with?’ I said: ‘In the acts that atone.’ He said: ‘And what are they?’ I said: ‘The footsteps to the congregation, the gatherings in the Masājid after the Salāh, doing wudhu perfectly during difficulties.’ He said: ‘Then what else?’ I said: ‘Feeding others, being lenient in speech, and Salāh during the night while the people are sleeping.’ He said: ‘Ask.’ I said: [the above]'” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed it is true, so study it and learn it.” (Tirmidhī 3235)

03 · Protection from the Evil of My Organs

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِيْ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ بَصَرِيْ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ لِسَانِيْ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَلْبِيْ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنِيِّيْ.

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min sharri samʿī, wa min sharri baṣarī, wa min sharri lisānī, wa min sharri qalbī, wa min sharri maniyyī.

O Allah, I seek Your protection from the evil of my hearing, the evil of my sight, the evil of my tongue, the evil of my heart and the evil of my semen.

- Shakal b. Ḥumayd (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me a way of seeking refuge so that I may seek refuge by it. He (Shakal) said: ‘So he took my hand and said: ‘Say: [the above].'” (Tirmidhī 3492)

04 · Hawqalah: A Treasure From the Treasures of Paradise

لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ

Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāh

There is no power (in averting evil) or strength (in attaining good) except through Allah

05 · When One Has The Urge to Sin #2

اَللّّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ ذَنْبِيْ وَ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِيْ وَحَصِّنْ فَرْجِيْ

Allāhumma-ghfir-lī dhanbī, wa ṭahhir qalbī, wa ḥaṣṣin farjī

Oh Allah! Forgive my sins, purify my heart, and protect my chastity.

- Abu Umāmah (RadiAllahu anhu) narrates: A young man approached the Prophet ﷺ and requested permission to commit zina (fornication). The people around him rebuked him, but the Prophet ﷺ called him closer and asked him to sit. He then inquired, "Would you like this for your mother?" The young man replied, "No, by Allāh, may I be sacrificed for you." The Prophet ﷺ responded, "Nor do people like it for their mothers." He asked the same question about his daughter, sister, paternal aunt, and maternal aunt, to which the young man gave the same reply. The Prophet ﷺ then placed his hand on the young man's chest and prayed, "O Allāh, forgive his sin, purify his heart, and protect his chastity." After this, the young man never looked at anything with desire again.(Ahmad 22211)

06 · When One Has The Urge To Sin #1

اَللّّٰهُمَّ ‌حَبِّبْ إِلَيْنَا الْإِيمَانَ وَزَيِّنْهُ فِي قُلُوبِنَا، وَكَرِّهْ إِلَيْنَا الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الرَّاشِدِينَ

Allāhumma ḥabbib ilaynal-īmāna, wa zayyinhu fī qulūbinā, wa karrih ilaynal-kufra wal-fusūqa wal-ʿiṣyān, wajʿalnā mina al-rāshidīn.

O Allāh, make faith beloved to us, and beautify it in our hearts, and make us hate disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience, and make us among the rightly guided.

- Rifa'a az-Zurqi (radiyAllāhu anhu) narrates; "In the Battle of Uhud when the idolaters retreated, the Messenger of Allāh, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Form straight ranks so that I can praise my Almighty Lord.' They formed in ranks behind him. He said, 'O Allāh, all praise is due to You. O Allāh, none can contract what You expand nor bring near what you put far away. None can put far away what You bring near. None can give what You withhold nor withhold what You give. O Allāh, grant us Your blessings, mercy, grace and provision in abundance! O Allah, I ask You for the abiding blessing which is neither changed nor removed. O Allāh, I ask You for blessing on the Day of Utter Poverty and security on the Day of Fear (i.e. Day of Judgement) O Allah, I seek Your protection from the evil of what You have granted us and the evil of what You have withheld from us. O Allāh, make us love belief and adorn our hearts with it. Make us hate disbelief, deviance and rebellion. Place us among the rightly-guided. O Allāh, make us die Muslims and make us live as Muslims and join us to the rightly, acting, who are neither humiliated or tested. O Allāh, fight the unbelievers who bar your path and who deny Your Messengers. Place You abasement and punishment over them. O Allah, fight the unbelievers who were given the Book, O Lord of Truth!'"(Al Adab Al Mufrad 699)
