01 · Seeking Protection for Children

أُعِيْذُكُمَا (أُعِيْذُكَ) بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَّهَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَّامَّةٍ.

Qur'an

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رضي الله عنهما قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَوِّذُ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّ أَبَاكُمَا كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ. (صحيح البخاري ٣٣٧١) عَنْ جَابِرٍ رضي الله عنه: عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: «إِذَا اسْتَجْنَحَ اللَّيْلُ أَوْ كَانَ جُنْحُ اللَّيْلِ فَكُفُّوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ تَنْتَشِرُ حِينَئِذٍ فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ سَاعَةٌ مِنَ الْعِشَاءِ فَحُلُّوهُمْ وَأَغْلِقْ بَابَكَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللهِ وَأَطْفِئْ مِصْبَاحَكَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللهِ وَأَوْكِ سِقَاءَكَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللهِ وَخَمِّرْ إِنَاءَكَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللهِ وَلَوْ تَعْرُضُ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا. (صحيح البخاري ٣٢٨٠)

Uʿīdhukumā (Uʿīdhuka) bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭāniw-wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynil-lāmmah

I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.

- Ibn ʿAbbās (radiy Allāhū ʿanhumā) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek Allah’s protection for Ḥasan and Ḥusayn (radiy Allāhū ʿanhumā) and say: “Your forefather (i.e. Ibrāhīm) used to seek refuge with Allah for Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq by reciting the [the above].” (Bukhārī 3371) Jābir (radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When the evening comes, keep your children in, for the devils come out at that time. Then when part of the night has passed, let them go. And close the doors and mention the name of Allah, for Shayṭān does not open a closed door. Tie up your waterskins and mention the name of Allah. Cover your vessels, even if you only put something over them and extinguish your lamps.” (Bukhārī 3280)

02 · For the Married Couple #1

بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِيْ خَيْرٍ

Qur'an

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا رَفَّأَ الْإِنْسَانَ إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ قَالَ: بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ. (سنن ابي داود ٢١٣٠)

Bāraka-llāhu lak, wa bāraka ʿalayk, wa jamaʿa baynakumā fī khayr.

May Allah bless you, shower blessings on you, and may He unite you in goodness.

- Abū Hurayrah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ congratulated a person on his marriage, he would say [the above]. (Abū Dāwūd 2130)

03 · For the Married Couple #2

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ

Qur'an

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَأَى عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ أَثَرَ صُفْرَةٍ، فَقَالَ: «مَا هَذَا؟ أَوْ مَهْ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنِّي تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً عَلَى وَزْنِ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَقَالَ: بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ. (سنن ابن ماجه ١٩٠٧)

Bāraka-llahu lak.

May Allah bless you.

- Anas bin Mālik (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ traces of yellow perfume on ʿAbdur Rahmān bin ʿAwf, and he asked him “What is this?” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I married a woman for the weight of a stone of gold. He said [the above] and then said: “Give a feast even if it is only with one sheep.” (Ibn Mājah 1907)

04 · For the Married Couple #3

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِيْهِمَا ، وَبَارِكْ لَهُمَا فِيْ بِنَائِهِمَا

Qur'an

عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِعَلِيٍّ رضي الله عنه: عِنْدَكَ فَاطِمَةُ، فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا حَاجَةُ ابْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ؟ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهَا، خَرَجَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رضي الله عنه، عَلَى أُولَئِكَ الرَّهْطِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يَنْتَظِرُونَهُ، قَالُوا: وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: مَا أَدْرِي غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ، قَالَ لِي: مَرْحَبًا، وَأَهْلًا ، فَقَالُوا: يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، إِحْدَاهُمَا أَعْطَاكَ الْأَهْلَ وَالْمَرْحَبَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ بَعْدَمَا زَوَّجَهُ، قَالَ: يَا عَلِيُّ إِنَّهُ لَا بُدَّ لِلْعَرُوسِ مِنْ وَلِيمَةٍ، قَالَ سَعْدٌ: عِنْدِي كَبْشٌ، وَجَمَعَ لَهُ رَهْطٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَصُوعًا مِنْ ذُرَةٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ لَيْلَةَ الْبِنَاءِ، قَالَ: لَا تُحْدِثْ شَيْئًا حَتَّى تَلْقَانِي، فَدَعَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمَاءٍ، فَتَوَضَّأَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَهُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ: اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِيهِمَا، وَبَارِكْ لَهُمَا فِي ‌بِنَائِهما. (المعجم الكبير للطبراني ١١٥٣)

Allāhumma bārik fīhima, wa bārik lahuma fī binā’ihimā.

O Allah, bless both of them, and bless them in their union.

- Buraydah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said [the above] on the night ʿAlī (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) married Fātimah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhā). (Al Mu’jam Al Kabīr Tabrāni 1153)

05 · Upon Marrying

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ

Qur'an

عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ أَحَدُكُمُ امْرَأَةً أَوِ اشْتَرَى خَادِمًا فَلْيَقُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ، وَإِذَا اشْتَرَى بَعِيرًا فَلْيَأْخُذْ بِذِرْوَةِ سَنَامِهِ، وَلْيَقُلْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ. قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ : زَادَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ ثُمَّ لْيَأْخُذْ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا، وَلْيَدْعُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ فِي الْمَرْأَةِ وَالْخَادِمِ. (سنن ابي داود ٢١٦٠)

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayrahā, wa khayra ma jabaltahā ʿalayhi, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharriha, wa min sharri ma jabaltahā ʿalayh.

O Allah, I ask You for the good in her and the good that You have created in her, and I seek Your protection from her evil and the evil that You have created in her.

- ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated from his father that his grandfather (ʿAbdullah b. ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs) narrated the Prophet ﷺ saying: “If one of you marries a woman or buys a slave girl, he should say: [the above]. If he buys a camel, he should take hold of the top of its hump and say the same.” According to another narration he said: “Then he should take hold of her forelock and supplicate for blessing in the woman or the slave girl.” (Abū Dāwūd 2160)

06 · Before Intimacy

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ ، وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا‏

Qur'an

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال لو أن أحدكم إذا أتى أهله قل: بسم اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ، وَجَنِّبْ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رزقتنا، فقضي بينهما ولد لم يضره. (صحيح البخاري ١٤١)

Bismi-llāh, Allāhumma jannibna-sh-shayṭān, wa jannibi-sh-shayṭāna mā razaqtanā.

In the Name of Allah. O Allah, protect us from Shayṭān and keep Shayṭān away from what You provide us with.

07 · For Children

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ

Rabbi lā tadharnī farda-w-wa Anta khayrul-wārithīn.

My Lord, do not leave me childless, though You are the best of inheritors. (21:89)

08 · For Pious Children #1

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَّاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhuriyyātinā qurrata aʿyuni-w-wajʿalnā lil-muttaqīna imāmā.

Our Lord, grant us spouses and offspring who will be a joy to our eyes, and make us leaders of those who have taqwa (piety). (25:74)

09 · For Pious Children #2

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ

Rabbij-ʿalnī muqīma-ṣ-ṣalāti wa min dhurriy-yatī Rabbanā wa taqabbal duʿā’.

My Lord, make me steadfast in Salāh, and my offspring as well. Our Lord, accept my prayer. (14:40)

10 · For Pious Children #3

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Rabbi hab lī mina-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

My Lord, grant me (offspring) from amongst the righteous. (37:100)

11 · For Pious Children #4

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Rabbi hab lī mi-l-ladunka dhuriyyatan ṭayyibah, innaka samīʿ-ud-duʿā’.

My Lord, grant me from Yourself pious offspring. Indeed, You hear all prayers. (3:38)

12 · Congratulating the Parent of a Newborn

بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِيْهِ وَجَعَلَهُ بَرًّا تَقِيًّا

Qur'an

قَالَ(انس رضي الله عنه): فوضعتْهُ، فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: اذْهَبْ يَا أَنَسُ إِلَى أُمك، فَقُلْ لَهَا: إِذَا قطعتِ سرارَ ابْنِكِ، فَلا تُذيقيه شَيْئًا حَتَّى تُرْسِلِي بِهِ إليَّ، قَالَ: فَوَضَعَتْهُ عَلَى ذِرَاعِي، حَتَّى أتيتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فوضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: ائْتِنِي بِثَلَاثِ تَمَرَاتٍ عَجْوَةٍ، قَالَ: فَجِئْتُهُ بِهِنَّ، فَقَذَفَ نَوَاهُنَّ، ثُمَّ قَذَفَهُ فِي فِيهِ، فَلاكَهُ، ثُمَّ فَتَحَ فَا الغلامِ، فَجَعَلَهُ فِي فِيهِ، فَجَعَلَ يَتَلَمَّظُ، فَقَالَ أنصاريٌّ يُحِبُّ التَّمْرَ، فَقَالَ: اذْهَبْ إِلَى أُمِّك، فَقُلْ: بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكِ فِيهِ، وَجَعَلَهُ بَرًّا تَقِيًّا. (مسند البزار ٧٣١٠)

Bārak-Allāhu laka fīhī wa jaʿalahū barran taqiyyā.

May Allah bless him for you and make him righteous and God fearing.

- Anas (radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) said: ‘..then she (the Mother of Anas (radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) gave birth. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Oh Anas, go to your Mother and tell her, after you have cut the umbilical cord of your son, do not let him taste (eat) anything until you have bought him to me.’ Anas (radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) said: ‘I put the child in my arms and took him to The Messenger of Allahﷺ . I placed him in front of The Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He ﷺ said: ‘Bring me three Ajwah dates.’ Anas (radiy Allāhū ʿanhumā) said: ‘I bought them’. He ﷺ then discarded the datestones and put the dates in His mouth and began (chewing) mixing the dates with His saliva. He ﷺ then opened the baby’s mouth and placed it (the chewed date) inside. The baby began licking its lips. An Ansari Companion (radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) remarked: He (the baby) likes dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said (to Anas radiy Allāhū ʿanhu) ‘Go to your Mother and say: [the above].’ (Musnad al-Bazzār 7310)
